GRAMMY-AWARD WINNING, GARRETT SORENSON, LVL TEACHER
Grammy Award winning and Tony Award nominated American tenor Garrett Sorenson has been praised as an artist of unique interest, garnering critical acclaim for the beauty and power of his rich lyric voice. In the 2025–2026 season, Mr. Sorenson joins the Grand Rapids Symphony for Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 conducted by Marcelo Lehninger and performs Rachmaninoff’s The Bells with both the Kansas City Symphony and the Cincinnati Symphony, conducted by Matthias Pintscher.
A frequent guest on major opera and concert stages, Mr. Sorenson created the role of Steve Wozniak in the world premiere of Mason Bates’ The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs at Santa Fe Opera, later reprising the role in his debut at Seattle Opera and on the 2019 GRAMMY Award-winning recording. Other operatic highlights include appearances with the Metropolitan Opera in roles such as Laca (Jenůfa), Matteo (Arabella), and Cassio (Otello), and performances with San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Canadian Opera Company.
On the concert stage, he has sung with the Cleveland Orchestra, Houston Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, and Nashville Symphony, among others. He also appeared on Broadway in Master Class opposite Tyne Daly, which transferred to London’s West End and received a Tony-Nomination for Best Revival of a Play.
Since becoming a Grand Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Elizabeth Batton Sorenson has performed in concert, on recording, and on the operatic stage to international acclaim. She has sung the title role of Carmen in concert and on stage, where Opera News described her performance as “seductive” and “a vocal powerhouse of dark, burnished bronze, seamless throughout its range, a steady flow of gorgeous sound.” Her voice is defined by The New York Times as a “striking” and “splendidly-full mezzo”, “full of alluring and comforting warmth”, “who sings with full rich sound and sensibility”. The Financial Times lauds her as “heart-melting”, an “American mezzo with a gorgeous voice and a wonderfully natural stage personality”.
Elizabeth has performed leading roles in over 70 productions with top houses across the United States, Canada, Europe and China. From Kentucky Opera to Lincoln Center in NYC, and has recorded numerous performances with top classical labels. Of her concert singing, Time Out New York says she is a “commanding voice who’s clearly headed for stardom”. The Wall Street Journal describes her as “a standout” and The Washington Post says she is “an excellent mezzo-soprano with contralto overtones”. Opera News says “dark, potently expressive voice” and by The Washington Post as “the finest singer on stage”. Opera Today calls her a “vibrant mezzo with a volatile personality” and a “plummy mezzo, with awesomely rich chest tones''. She has also been featured on the cover of Opera News Magazine.
Together, Garrett & Elizabeth teach the 18th century Bel Canto and 17th Century Appoggio techniques to their students and apply it to a variety of musical styles. They celebrate accomplishments big and small in their studio. From singing better in the home, community, or school choir, to auditioning for a musical or opera, we are here to help each singer use their voice in a healthy and enjoyable way. Admission into Governor’s School for The Arts Vocal and Musical Theatre Programs and the Washington National Opera Institute, talent scholarships to various college vocal programs, including, but not limited to, Juilliard Summer Program, New England Conservatory, Carnegie Mellon, New York University, Syracuse College of Performing Arts, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Indiana University, and University of Kentucky, University of Louisville and millions of dollars of scholarships offered to students for students who have auditioned for Voice, Theatre and Musical Theatre programs in various colleges. Two recent alumni have progressed in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Our adult students have a variety of professional backgrounds, including many who already have a voice or music theatre degree or career. Studio singers, both youth and adult have sung with area theatres including Derby Dinner Playhouse, Stage One, Center Stage, Pandora Productions, Actor’s Theatre, YPAS, Clarksville Little Theatre, Red Line Performing Arts, Cool Mountain Theatre and Kentucky Opera.
Students also enjoy being featured in bi-annual recitals or cabarets as a part of their tuition, and are encouraged to sing a variety of vocal styles. From gospel to country, rock to pop, R&B to jazz, or musical theatre to classical, we guide each singer in a healthy approach to all genres!
